Peace Day
2015
To close out the first month of 2015, C.E.I.P Manuel Luis Acuña celebrated Peace Day on Friday, January 30th. Peace day is a day that was founded by the Spanish poet Llorenç Vidal Vidal in Majorca in 1964 to highlight education with a commitment to non-violence. Peace day is celebrated in schools in Spain on January 30th every year, which is the anniversary of the date that Mahatma Gandhi was assisinated for his leadership in the non-violence movement. To celebrate this important day, students and teachers gathered after recess for an assembly to explore questions such as "What is non-violence?" "What does practicing non- violence look like?" and "Who are some famous leaders who practiced non-violence?". There were various presentations and readings by students and teachers alike, and each explored a very important aspect of Peace Day. Students learned through a monologue an example of what non- violence looks like in practice, and they also learned about several Nobel Peace Prize winners who dedicated their lives in the service of non violence. This year the presentation focused on women who won the Nobel Peace Prize, such as Rigoberta Menchú and Mother Teresa. By learning through their examples, we hope that each member of our school community left this presentation inspired to both keep the peace and stand up in the face of injustice.
